OH NOT AGAIN!!! Another Baby Abandoned By Teenage Mother In Osun State (PICTURED)

Mother Abandons Infant in HospitalHealth workers and patients at the Osun State General Hospital, Osogbo were left confused on Friday when a nursing mother, Mrs. Grace Adipe, allegedly abandoned her three-day-old baby in the hospital.

The hospital community was taken aback as the news of the abandonment spread.

A woman, Adijat Bamijoko, told NAN that she was in the hospital to assist a patient when the incident occurred on Thursday, and wondered “how a nursing mother could abandon her child.

“Although, I do not know the woman, but one wonders why she should abandon her baby in the hospital where Gov. Rauf Aregbesola had made medication free for all,” she said.

Other people who expressed surprise over the incident, called on the hospital’s management to ensure that the fleeing mother was brought back to care for her baby.

Search team, including government officials and law enforcement agents had failed in their effort to find the woman.

The Osun Commissioner for Women and Children’s Affairs, Mrs. Mofolake Adegboyega, said in a statement that efforts to contact the woman by the hospital authorities were yet to yield results.

Adegboyega called Adipe’s relations and members of the public to be vigilant on the whereabouts of the woman.

She urged members of the public to consider the innocence and future of the child and help in efforts to find the mother and her relations.

The commissioner said that any information about Adipe’s whereabouts should be directed to the nearest police station or the Director of Social Welfare in the ministry, Mrs. Grace Adegoke.

Amaechi Warns On 2015 Elections Playing Out Like NGF Poll

Embattled Rivers State Governor, Rotimi Amaechi on Wednesday decried the lingering Nigeria Governors’ Forum (NGF) crisis which he said was an indication of what was likely to happen in the 2015 elections where people who lose will reject the results and cling onto power.

Amaechi, who was speaking at a stakeholders’ symposium on the review of the 1999 Constitution in Abuja said, “Let me put it on record that the way things are going, 2015 elections will end in this manner where people will win democratic elections and those in power will not accept the results.”

Amaechi, who won the May 24 NGF election in Abuja, was curious as to why some people would be backing Governor Jonah Jang of Plateau State, who contested against him and lost.

The governor described Jang and his supporters as undemocratic and accused the Nigeria Bar Association of keeping silent in the face of Jang’s action and his supporters after the NGF poll.

Amaechi, who said he had been trying to avoid the microphone because of too many problems in the country, told the audience that since he had been made to mount the podium, he was ready to make “headlines.”

Taking the NBA to the cleaners first, Amaechi said, “The NBA cannot afford to lose its voice, but you have lost your voice. For the NBA to see a free and fair election, where 35 governors who govern 35 states in the nation, who make decisions for hundreds of millions of Nigerians, for NBA to say that ‘if they can’t organise themselves dissolve,’ you have lost your voice.

“I say it and I want to be put on record that anybody who supports the Jang group is undemocratic.

“Before that the NGF election, we chose who will be the returning officer, we appointed our director-general to be the returning officer and we voted.

“Everybody voted; everybody including Jang. Jang was even among the first persons to vote.

“When I won my brother from Akwa Ibom State (Godswill Akpabio) stood up and said, ‘there’s a document I have where 19 governors have signed for us.’

“And Jang says the Northern States Governors’ Forum supported him. Which Northern governors? They should have voted for him. He also said the PDP governors supported him before the election, then the PDP governors should have voted for him.

“What you have that Jang is leading is another faction of the PDP Governors’ Forum, not the NGF.

“Anybody, whether NBA or government that supports Jang’s faction is undemocratic.”

Imploring Nigerians and the judiciary to rise up and defend their rights, Amaechi said, “My Lords, you must defend our democracy and Nigeria. We don’t have any other country anywhere else, the only country we have is this.

“We must be prepared as a people to defend our rights; we must be prepared as a people to hold government accountable. We must be prepared as a people to demand accountability.”

Amaechi urged Nigerians to resist a situation “where non-government officers that have no public function can order the Inspector-General of Police to change commissioners of police.”

The governor also used the occasion to reiterate his call for the establishment of state police in the ongoing constitution review adding that it was not proper for the President to appoint commissioners of police.

In apparent reference to the face-off between him and the Rivers state police commissioner, Amaechi said, “You were talking about state prisons and state police. We don’t have state prisons; we don’t have state police.

“A situation where governors are left helpless and hopeless because somebody here in Abuja determines who becomes my commissioner of police, and tells him what to do, and he makes the city uncomfortable and ungovernable, is not the kind of constitution that I will want to support.”

Opinion: The Discrimination Of HND Holders In Nigeria

Right from the emergence of western education in Nigeria, there has been a lot of controversies generated regarding the disparity that is breeding between degree and Higher national diploma certificates. This dichotomy has escalated to a stage that
most of the graduates that were trained in polytechnics wished to pursue a degree certificate but for lack of privilege. Having a concrete and theoretical view into the backgrounds, it is pertinent to know the significance of polytechnic training in the area of technological development and nation building. Generally, the polytechnic is majorly established to equip man powers with the necessary technological skills use in nation building. To add verisimilitude, this particular disparity is still in existence at full edge especially in Nigeria labour markets. Most of corporate organisations have special preference for university graduates compare to their polytechnic counterparts with governmental set ups inclusive. Some companies will go as far as placing in their adverts in the national dailys that only university degrees are allowed, though many private enterprises accept HND but a degree certificate is an added advantage. This dichotomy is not only restricted to the private enterprises, the civil service of the nation owned at the state or federal government level also embrace this in their process of recruitment due to the fact that a new employee holding a HND certificates starts at the position of grade level 7 whereas a degree holder does so at grade level 8. Looking at the process of retirement in the civil service, it is learnt that a HND holder retires at the grade level 14 while a university graduate retires at grade level 16. Is this not a complete devaluation of HND certificate? Even though there are many polytechnics in Nigeria producing middle level man power, the level of its development is still at a slower rate. This particular disparity breeding regarding degree and HND has resulted in many students opting for university degree which is purely academic and research-based compare to polytechnic training that entails practical and pragmatism. This dichotomy is doing more harm than good in
the area of economic growth and educational development. For instance, there are some cases where a university graduate of mechanical engineering was unable to repair a faulty automobile; this particular episode has obviously reflected the theoretical nature of university training. Examining the issue critically, polytechnic education is scientifically and technologically oriented in the sense that proper scientific training is offered in the area of engineering technology, textile development, architectural technology, automobile system development and host of others. Even in Nigeria of nowadays, you will hardly see a situation where parents wish their wards to attend polytechnics owing to some of the aforementioned facts. Every child wants to become a medical doctor, lawyer, engineer, nurse and so on, nursing the believe that all these professions are trained in the university. Even the unified tertiary matriculation examination which serves as the qualifying examination into
the Nigerian universities, polytechnics and college of education experienced mass application into the universities whereas the slot for admission is limited. Some students even prefer staying at home for a long period of time waiting for university admission rather than proceeding towards polytechnic. At the corner of professionalism, higher percentage of professional institutions in Nigeria reserves an enjoyment galore for university graduate applicants in the course of their professional trainings such as ICAN whereas HND holders require some particular exams before being duly eligible. In the course of attaining postgraduate degrees such as masters degree and doctor of
philosophy, a HND holder is required to procure a postgraduate diploma of a recognised university before he is eligible to further with his second degree. In the area of education privileges, it is learnt that most of the scholarship available in Nigeria are meant for university undergraduates and graduates. Even the international one has preference for degree. For instance, petroleum trust development fund (PTDF) is a scheme that has executed a wide range of development projects such as building of laboratories and complexes in many universities across Nigeria. In conclusion, here are some
proffered solutions that may definitely bridge the gaps resulting from the disparity Employment into various cadres of positions in the civil service, government parastatals, corporate organisations and private establishment should not only be based on certification but also on the individual capability and practical experience through proper interviewing and scrutinization. Proper orientation and enlightenment programmes should be given to all graduates irrespective of their graduating schools on the need for self autonomy and reliance. The federal government should eradicate the dichotomy by passing a legislative act regarding that
and the equivalence of HND with B.tech of a university. if all these gaps are cleared , polytechnic education will be appealing to admission seekers and thus divert their
focus on compulsory university attendance, I hope with this , the country will be propelling towards an
enviable height.

I’m Old Enough To Be Amaechi’s Father, Says Jang

The war of words between foremost contenders to the chairmanship position of the Nigeria Governors’ Forum (NGF) continued yesterday with Plateau state Governor Jonah Jang declaring that he cannot be seen to be contending a position with his Rivers state counterpart, Rotimi Amaechi, who he called his son.

Speaking to newsmen at the sideline of the dinner organised by President Goodluck Jonathan to celebrate his mid-term in office, Jang said he is old enough to be Amaechi’s father.

“Amaechi is my younger brother, infact, I can say son because if you look at Amaechi’s age, I’m old enough to be his father” he said.

On a statement credited to Mr Amaechi that he won the NGF election by 19 votes to 16, Jang indicated indifference as he responded, “Well, that is his problem but I know that I am the Chairman of the Nigeria Governors’ Forum.”

Since the controversial May 24th election of the NGF, Jang and Amaechi have both laid claim to the chairmanship of the Forum with their tussle splitting the NGF into two factions.

Detained Boko Haram Suspects Plead For Second Chance, Say They Were Brainwashed

Over 50 detained members of the Boko Haram sect have appealed to Federal Government to give them a second chance as they were ‘brain washed’ into picking up arms against the Nigerian state and its citizens.

The sect members made the appeal when the presidential committee on dialogue and peaceful resolution of security challenges in the North visited one of the detention centres in Maiduguri, Borno State capital on Tuesday.

According to one of the detainees Adam Konto, who introduced himself to the chairman of the committee, Kabir Turaki as the Amir (Commander) of the Bayan quarters, one of Boko Haram’s strongholds in Maiduguri, the detained members if released, will be law abiding and assist the FG in bringing the deadly insurgence to an end.

Konto, who claimed to be speaking on behalf of his comrades-at-arms said: “We pledge to assist the authorities if given a second chance as most of us were brainwashed and recruited into the sect and given instructions to carry out dastardly acts without our full understanding of what we were doing.”

Another detainee, who gave his name as Babagana Saje, said that he was ready to denounce the sect and commended the Police for taking good care of them.

He said: “The police have been treating us fine. We have been allowed to take our bath and have been well fed.”

In his response, after listening to the sect members’ submissions, Turaki, who is also Minister of Special Duties, promised to look into their cases.

He said: “If you are sincere with this information we have gathered, we will bring you into the proposed amnesty agenda.”

I killed 23 people in 48 hrs – Boko Haram member

A Boko Haram member yesterday revealed how he killed 23 people including a village head and a police officer in Maiduguri in two days. The suspect, who started reeling out his murderous escapade hours after he was arrested by the volunteer armed youths famously known as civilian JTF, shocked residents when he confessed to have killed 23 people within 48 hours.

The middle-age man, arrested by the youths on Tuesday at Ngomari ward, Bakin Borehole within Maiduguri metropolis and subsequently handed over to the Joint Task Force, Operation Restore Order, said he slaughtered a village head and a police officer because he felt they were against the activities of the dreaded sect.

Residents of the area where the suspect was arrested said he came from Gwange, adding that the suspect was picked up by the vigilance youth group following the arrest of his younger brother who assisted the youths by taking them to Ngomari where the suspect was residing until his arrest.

“We were shocked when we heard that civilian JTF came and arrested a sect member in our area.

We have never imagined we could have somebody like that in our area because we have been living peacefully. We were even more shocked when he confessed that he killed 23 people in two days,” one of the residents who did not want his name in print told journalists. Sources said the suspected Boko Haram member had relocated about a year ago to Ngomari from Gwange. “He rented a room apartment there and lived discreetly,” some residents said.

Family begins burial preparations as Nelson Mandela stops breathing

Nelson Mandela's tribal leaders have been told to prepare for the death of the former president, who remains in hospital unable to breathe without support. The advice comes after meetings with the family over the past two days.

Senior tribal leaders – including Mr Mandela's tribal heir, grandson Mandla Mandela – are expected to visit the hospital for further talks with family members.

Nelson Mandela remains in critical condition, according to the South African government, and multiple sources have confirmed to Sky News that he is no longer able to breathe unassisted.

In the Eastern Cape, where Mr Mandela will be buried, a member of the tribal authority confirmed that the clan had been told that he is extremely ill and although it is against Xhosa tradition to even discuss the death of a living person, they should prepare for the worst.

There are a series of tribal rituals that will be observed by the family and the nation throughout this period and during the funeral, although Mr Mandela, a Methodist, will be given a Christian burial.

Outside the Pretoria hospital where Mr Mandela has been treated for the past 19 days, well-wishers continue to lay flowers and cards supporting this national and world icon. Police have increased security and blocked the road to traffic outside the rear entrance to the hospital.

An officer said this was to allow the free passage of family and VIPs who have been visiting the hospital throughout Mr Mandela's stay. For the first time the South African people appear to be accepting that the end of this remarkable life is approaching.

"He has done so much for this country, it is terribly sad but we have to accept it however hard it may seem," said a lady reading messages pinned to the hospital wall.

The office of President Jacob Zuma says that Mr Mandela remains critical but the President, asking the nation to pray, added that South Africa had to accept that "Madiba is old".

If You Have These Symptoms, Do HIV Test

The war against HIV/AIDS is far from being over. This is because, globally, more than 34 million people now live with HIV/AIDS, while 3.3 million of them are under the age of 15.

According to amfAR, The Foundation for AIDS Research, which is dedicated to ending the global AIDS epidemic through innovative research, in 2011 alone, an estimated 2.5 million people were newly infected with HIV; and out of these, 330,000 were under the age of 15.

Sad to say, everyday, nearly 7,000 people contract HIV — nearly 300 every hour.

And, despite the giant strides made in the fight against this disease, in 2011, 1.7 million people died from AIDS, and 230,000 of them were under the age of 15.

And if you must know, more than two-thirds (69 per cent) of all people living with HIV (23.5 million), live in sub-Saharan Africa, of which Nigeria is a part.

Ninety-one percent of the world's HIV-positive children are also found in the sub-Sahara. And in 2011, an estimated 1.8 million people in the region became newly infected.

An estimated 1.2 million adults and children died of AIDS, accounting for 71 per cent of the world's AIDS deaths in 2011.

Experts say since the beginning of the epidemic in the early 1980s, more than 60 million people, globally, have contracted HIV; and nearly 30 million have died of HIV-related causes.

If these statistics convey any message at all, it is this: HIV knows no border and anybody can be infected with it. Worse still is the huge number of young people who were indicated as victims of this disease. Indeed, experts fear that apart from young people who may have been born HIV-positive as a result of Mother-To-Child-Transmission, many young people contract the infectious disease through unprotected sex with someone already infected.

But then, medical experts tell us that though there's no cure for HIV/AIDS yet, when detected early, HIV can be managed and prevented from progressing to AIDS. The Director-General of the National Agency for the Control of AIDS, Prof. John Idoko, advises every sexually active person to regularly undergo HIV screening, so that they will know their HIV status.

Epidemiologist and Deputy Director, HIV/AIDS Division, Federal Ministry of Health, Mr. Segilola Araoye, recommends being tested at least once a year if you do things that can transmit HIV infection, such as injecting drugs or steroids with used injection equipment; having sex for money or drugs; having sex with an HIV infected person; having more than one sex partner since your HIV test; and having a sex partner who has had other sex partners since your last HIV test.

Experts say you are more likely to be infected with HIV if you have ever shared injection drug needles and syringes; have ever had sex without a condom with someone who had HIV; have ever had a sexually transmitted disease like Chlamydia or gonorrhoea; received a blood transfusion or a blood clotting factor between 1978 and 1985; and if you have ever had sex with someone who has done any of those things.

And if you happen to be one of those people who still dither about having HIV screening, here are the symptoms to look out for as you wonder whether or not you are HIV-positive.

The first one is fever. Family doctor, Eugene Osazie, says within a month or two of HIV entering the body, 40-90 per cent of people experience flu-like symptoms known as "acute retroviral syndrome." She also notes that sometimes, HIV may not manifest for years. "As such, many people may even be HIV-positive without being aware," she says.

She notes that such fever may be accompanied by certain symptoms such as fatigue, swollen lymph glands, and a sore throat, which may last for a few weeks. "By this time, the virus is moving into the blood stream and starting to replicate in large numbers," Osazie warns.

She also warns that when HIV enters the bloodstream, it begins to attack certain white blood cells known as CD4 cells — the specialised cells that are a part of our immune system. "The immune system then produces antibodies to fight off infection. When you take an HIV test, doctors are actually looking for the presence of these antibodies, which confirm that HIV infection has occurred," Osazie counsels.

Again, you should be worried if you now feel fatigued by simple activities that you were used to, such as walking; or if you feel pain in the joints and muscles, among others.

"One of the things that should ginger you up is when you start having swellings in the armpits, groin and neck, as these are some of the parts of the body where you have the lymph nodes.

"The lymph nodes are a sort of garrisons, as they act as filters for foreign particles and are important in the proper functioning of the immune system. When they are inflamed or swollen, therefore, it is an indication that something has gone wrong in the body, and only a competent medical screening can tell us what is cooking," Dr. David Anyaegbuna of DuCross Clinics, Festac Town, Lagos, says.

Sore throat and headaches are also things to worry about if you have been engaging in risky behaviours as outlined above, experts warn. Ditto unexplained rash or boils, Anyaegbuna says.

Physicians also say nausea, vomiting and constant stooling (diarrhoea), as well as weight loss should be a wake-up call for HIV screening, as these may be signs that the immune system is being depleted systematically.

Doctors also advise that if you have prolonged dry cough that has become resistant to regular antibiotics; or if you always have night sweats even when the weather is cool; or if you develop mouth ulcers or genital herpes, go for HIV screening.

The online portal, health.com, also warns that if the colour of the nail changes, or if it thickens, splits or becomes discoloured with black or brown lines, HIV may be responsible.

As HIV courses through the body, Anyaegbuna says, the virus damages the nerves. It is then people start having tingling in the hands and feet — otherwise known as "peripheral neuropathy," as you find among those who have diabetes.

Gynaecologists also warn that if, as a young or middle aged woman, you have fewer and lighter periods, it may be a manifestation of advanced HIV, which sometimes increases the incidence of menstrual irregularities.

Idoko agrees that those working in the field of HIV/AIDS need regular skills acquisition training. And in order to further equip resource persons, the Federal Ministry of Health, in collaboration with global bodies that include the World Health Organisation, holds regular stakeholders' meetings, during which workers are trained to better understand relevant issues.

At one of such trainings in Lagos recently, a WHO official, Dr. Niyi Ogundiran, notes that the trainings aim to provide caregivers and those working in the field of HIV/AIDS practical knowledge about how to provide support for people living positively.

"The training also seeks to sharpen caregivers' communications skills to enable them to provide appropriate guidance for people living with the virus," Ogundiran says.

On the paucity of funds that tends to affect health care delivery in the country, Araoye advocates continued judicious utilisation of available resources in order to curb the spread of the disease.
