As part of measures to make the declaration of a state of emergency in the crisis-ridden states of Adamawa, Borno and Yobe effective, mobile phone service was turned off yesterday as the military began a major offensive against insurgents in those states.
According to some residents of the affected states, services of all the GSM networks—Airtel, MTN, Glo and Etisalat were unavailable since early morning of Thursday.
Information Nigeria gathered that the whole of Yobe and Borno states were affected by the decision while Mubi, Hong, Mahia, Michika and Ka’alha are said to be affected in Adamawa State.
Although there has been no official statement on why the cell phone services were switched off, it is widely believed that the action is a pre-emptive move against the terrorists who have used mobile phones to remotely detonate bombs in the past.
